Organic Matters....Soil is composed of sand, silt, clay and Organic Matter. Though Organic Matter comprises only a small percentage of healthy soil (4-6%), it is what differentiates "soil" from "dirt". Before the advent of NPK fertilizers, farmers relied on a simple measure of Organic Matter in their soil to determine how fertile their soil was. Organic Matter was considered the "bank account" for the farmer, and the amount they had was directly related to their crop yield. That relationship still exists today, though somewhat neglected, it is only through the rising costs of fertilizers and ever decreasing yields that we have been reminded of the importance of preserving Organic Matter levels in the soil. When a chemical fertilizer, pesticide, or fungicide is applied to the soil, a small percentage of Organic Matter is oxidized, or burned away. After 100 years of chemical fertilizer applications, the Organic Matter levels of many soils have dropped to below 2%. When there is not enough organic matter in the soil, soil simply doesn't work. This fact has driven land managers to rethink the way in which they fertilize their soil. Soil Health Care's signature product O.M., has been so named for the incredibly high percentage of Organic Matter present in the material. Over 80% stable Organic Matter! This incredibly complex humus belongs to a unique group of soils that is characterized by a tremendous amount of surface area. One gram of O.M. SuperHumus has over 200,000 square feet of surface area! That is 4 acres, in the palm of your hand! One gallon of the O.M. Plant Beverage has over 300 football fields (600 acres) of molecular surface area! Composed of a lignin macromolecule with multiple available receptor sites and a powerful base attraction, O.M. SuperHumus acts like a powerful magnet in the soil, bonding positively charged particles (fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides) thus reducing volatilization and leaching into the environment. This powerful combination of properties makes O.M. the ultimate addition to any fertility program. , |
